Your correspondent vs Steve McMahon
Euromoney is a great believer in mucking in with the tough jobs. So, in a recent media versus Barclays Capital football challenge in Singapore for the Beyond Social Services children’s charity, your correspondent put up his hand to go in goal.
We had expected to be facing a few unfit forex traders. Instead we found ourselves playing a team from EPSN Star Sports who had brought along Steve McMahon, the former Liverpool and England player, renowned as one of the true hard men of the English game through the late 80s and early 90s.
Oddly, your correspondent is from Liverpool and spent much of his youth watching McMahon doing his enforcing best at Anfield, Liverpool’s football ground. He reported this to McMahon in hope of leniency. This proved a doomed strategy.
Euromoney is pleased to report that, despite being into his late 40s, McMahon has lost none of his enthusiasm for the game, nor for the competitive spirit. He put three goals past us in the space of 10 minutes as well as administering a cheerful hoof into your correspondent’s ribs.
Still, the Barclays Singapore football team won the final, which McMahon curiously opted out of, suggesting that Barclays still knows a thing or two about risk management strategy.
